Lots of people run caged stock daily, no big deal. But yeah, mine are padded with pretty strong foam. Hit my head once, hurt less than the plastic interior of my car.

Miata friend of mine had the SFI padding. He was rear ended by a truck at 70 mph, and smacked his head pretty hard on his roll bar... luckily, he only got a concussion.
I would suggest some softer foam on top, or the dual density stuff like Lawrence was saying.
